| AION Beta |

So, I finally reserved my copy of Aion: The Tower of Eternity. When i did so, I got a key for the closed weekend beta events, and I will have access to the game before most others, because I got the collector's edition of the game, which will also include an action figure, and some pretty awesome in game items (including an amazing set of collector's edition only wings).
Today, I woke up late (because i'm an idiot and didnt check the settings on my phone's alarm settings. Because of this, I was going to just call in and come in a couple hours late, called in, and was denied, told i had to take the day off in order to not get written up (same penalty if i call off, lol). So, I decided to clock a little time on AION.
Let me start out by saying, this game has already made me very happy, even just in the starting area of the one race we are able to play as right now. I was worried, due to my experience with other MMOs at launch, namely Age of Conan. AOC was glitchy, servers were unstable, and leveling was a chore. Mind you, not everyhing about AOC was horrible, but I don't want to get off track with the topic of this entry.
First off, the game is quite visually stunning. Yes, some of the environments leave something to be desired, but for the most part, you will never notice this, due to the immaculate rendering of the characters, both player and NPC. If you wanted to, you could easily spend half an hour trying to decide between all of the different settings for how your character looks. I also like the fact that you are able to choose what the armor you start with looks like. Granted, you only have three options (light, medium, and heavy, variant only in looks), but I think that this is a rather interesting addition.
I decided to roll a Scout class for this beta weekend. I pretty much did my best to make my character look as horrible as i could, but he ended up looking like a mix of Elijah Wood and Orlando Bloom (each when they were in LOTR). The name that I've chosen to use through the beta is Maufaux, so you'll be seeing him in several different incarnations as the beta weekends pass.
Combat in the first few levels is kind of basic, however, once you get a few levels in, you will begin to learn chain attacks, which allow a little more variance in combat. Some chains will be triggered witha parry, while others are dependant on other attacks.
The gathering system (herbs/ore) is also rather interesting, in that it uses a progress bar, showing how close you are to both failing and being sucessful with that gather. ( You can see this in the screenshots below).
Questing so far has been a nice mixture of the usual questing elements (drop quests, gathering quests, mass killing), as so far has kept me interested. The storyline is also quite interesting. I'm not going to go into any specifics on that, just in case someone reading this doesnt want spoilers, however, I will say that it does well to keep you wanting to find out more about your character and their past.
I just got to level 10, and got my flight ability. I'll most likely roll another character tonight at a lan party so that we can call level those characters up together, but even still, I decided to declare my class change, in case i do get to play that character tomorrow. I decided to make him an assassin, since i'm a big fan of rogue-y classes.
